For many families in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, paying rent each month can be difficult. Fortunately, there are assistance programs through both cities that can provide some financial relief. One of these programs is Section 8.

What Is Section 8?

Section 8 is a national rent assistance program that provides vouchers to help low-income families to help pay some or all of their housing costs. Families or individuals who meet the requirements can apply to the Section 8 voucher program, and if they’re approved and find an apartment or house, the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority or Saint Paul Public Housing Authority, depending on where the home is located, will start sending payments directly to the landlord.

Where Is Section 8 Housing in Minneapolis and Saint Paul?

Section 8 housing is located all over Minneapolis and Saint Paul. It’s up to a homeowner or property owner whether they want to participate in the program or not, so there are housing participants in most Minneapolis and Saint Paul neighborhoods.

If you’re granted Section 8 aid, you still have to apply like you normally would for a Minneapolis or Saint Paul rental property. Some properties may choose not to accept vouchers. Most properties will require a credit, criminal, and rental history check. The unit must pass an inspection before you can move in and the subsidy payments can start.

What Is the Most Section 8 Will Pay?

The payments cover some or all of the voucher holder’s rent. On average, 30%-40% of a qualified person’s adjusted gross income will go to their rent. Depending on your income, Section 8 will pay the remainder to your landlord.

How Do I Apply for Section 8 Housing in Minnesota?

If you’re interested in applying for Section 8 housing aid, the first thing you have to do is tell the housing authority you’re interested. Demand for housing aid is extremely high, so it’s likely if you qualify, you’ll be placed on a waitlist. These waitlists can be extremely long or even closed to new applicants. However, there are ways you can set up email alerts for when a waitlist reopens.
